  • Your depression isn’t caused by chemical imbalance… But chemical imbalance sure does feed its power! The root of your depression is a combo-hit of stress and/or trauma PLUS emotional dysregulation. When we can’t handle the weight of negative feelings and experiences, we’ll fall into the trap of using coping strategies that trigger a chemical imbalance. Binge-eating, intoxication, lack of sleep or too much of it…sometimes the smallest patterns of behavior can cause the biggest surge of power for our depression. I once hit a four-month pit of despair after drinking too much Mio in my water, which inevitably killed off my gut biome!!! Imagine what alcohol can do… The truth is that depression looks and feels different for everyone, but the source roots are the same: trauma and/or stress plus emotional dysregulation. The truth is that depression looks and feels different for everyone, but the fuel for it is the same: unhealthy lifestyle choices. The trick to curing it is realizing that “lifestyle” means more than just food and exercise, good sleep and gratitude. It’s a combination of how we operate across mind, body, soul, and cake ($$$). If mind, body, and soul feel healthy but your work life feels draining and you still feel depressed, ask yourself: do I feel like my work gives me a sense of purpose (i.e. connection to community through service)? If body, soul, and cake are healthy, ask yourself: does my mind feel like a positive space? Medications are meant to be short-term stabilizers, but if you aren’t cleaning up the four pillars of your lifestyle (mind, body, soul, and cake), then you’ll either find yourself dependent on meds, or regularly dipping into depression when you’re off, or without, them. Sometimes what we need is a breakdown so we can discover what all needs recalibrating.   • Your SPS is your guidance system for manifestation. Much like a GPS gets you from point A to point B, your SPS can guide you to transforming your timeline with intuitive insights. If you aren’t feeling aligned, here are 5 things you can do to recalibrate your SPS: 1. DETOX YOUR BODY: When your body is full of toxins (from food to alcohol, media to negative self-speak) it reduces your ability to feel your intuition. Take a week to detox your body while you do the remaining four suggestions… 2. LEARN EMOTIONAL REGULATION: When we learn to control our emotions, we learn to process stress, past traumas, and negative feelings in a healthy way. This makes it so that setbacks, disappointments, and spiritual voids (like being left in a state of intuitive limbo), don’t weaken our trust in our SPS, regardless of whether or not it’s pinging like a smoke detector. 3. START A GRATITUDE PRACTICE: Conditioning our mind to perceive opportunities for gratitude, especially when we’re depressed or functioning through heightened negativity, helps us not only regulate our emotions, but to also see the simple blessings in life that keep our SPS engaged and open for ongoing reciprocity. 4. FIND YOUR PURPOSE: Sometimes, our SPS goes offline so that we can sit in a period of time to gain personal awareness about our life purpose. Often our purpose is derived or directly created by the negative experiences we’ve had in life. Those quiet moments? They’re more important than you think… 5. CREATE A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE: Spirituality is about more than having a relationship to the divine. It’s also about expressing your spiritual essence with complete authenticity. Practice prayer, cleanse your mind and body, sit in meditation - but don’t forget to also connect with your actual spirit!   • Is the “rat race” of life feeding your depression??? We’re born into this world with no roadmap. Our family, peers, mentors, community leaders…even our exposure to media influences…all play a role in conditioning us to either live in authenticity, or live in functionality. When we live in a functional state, we may: ➡️ stay at a job that we hate, ➡️ eat foods that don’t nourish us, ➡️ binge-consume substances and media, ➡️ practice emotional dysregulation coping strategies, and ➡️ feel spiritually detached. All of this results in the festering of our depression. DEPRESSION = Trauma and/or Stress + Emotional Dysregulation When you don’t have positive emotional regulation skills, you might handle your stress by leaning into the conveniences of the rat race, rather than assessing how your participation in, and consumption, of it is affecting your wellbeing. And sometimes, even with emotional regulation, we still find ourselves depressed. What then?!? If we do all the healthy steps and we still find ourselves depressed, now what? The solution is purpose. Connection to Community through Service = PURPOSE. But to find our purpose and start living a life free from depression, we need to first free ourselves from our dependency on the rat race.
